An Overview of the Genesis G80

The G80 is a luxury mid-size sedan produced by Genesis, a brand division of Hyundai Motor Company. Previously, the G80 was presented as the 2nd generation, Hyundai Genesis. It was only in 2016 after Genesis had established its own luxury automobile brand Hyundai that it started to go by the name of G80.

The second generation G80 (codename RG3) was unveiled for the first time through an online Livestream session in early 2020. It proceeded to go on sale in the summer of the same year.

Meanwhile, the G80 Sport was released by design first in July 2021 before it was launched in the following month. The model sported an upgraded grille, headlights, bumpers, and wheels in comparison to the regular variant. It also brought the Cavendish Red which is reserved only for the Sport version, along with two gasoline powertrains and an option of diesel engine.

In addition, the Sport variant also features a rear-wheel steering function. This technology allows active controls to maximize the angle of front-wheel and rear-wheel steering.

The 2023 Genesis G80 Sport Powertrain

Fulfilling the expectation of its name, the G80 Sport features a sportier suspension with refined shock absorbers ad springs, along with upgraded varying damping according to the chosen driving mode. This is not to confuse the variant with a Sport+ driving mode that allows complete acceleration and faster gear shifts.

The 2023 Genesis G80 Sport is predicted to bring the same powertrain set, which isn’t different from the ones provided in the regular G80 version: a 2.5L turbocharged ICE, a 3.5L turbocharged ICE, and a 2.2L diesel engine. The 2.5L variant generates up to 300 HP and 311 lb-ft of torque, while the more powerful counterpart delivers 375 HP and 391 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the diesel version puts out 207 HP and 325 lb-ft of torque.

Either way, each engine is paired with 8-speed transmission, along with standard rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive configurations. Note that the diesel powertrain is not available for the North American market, but beyond that, it is quite identical to the ones released in its home country South Korea.

Trim-Exclusive Design and Features

Design-wise, what makes the 2023 Genesis G80 Sport different compared to the regular twin are the Cavendish Red paint color option and darker finishing for the 20” wheels. Some of the most recent upgrades are including standard complete LED headlights, dark chrome window trim, air curtains, and a dark chrome-accented grille. The G80 ICE-version offers a dual exhaust end system, while the diesel-variant conceals it underneath the rear bumper.

Moving to the interior part, it features Nappa leather seating wrap, genuine aluminum, metal pedals, and other upgrades reserved for the trim exclusively. These features are expected to make rounds again in the 2023 model year.

Direct Competitors and Price Estimation

The G80 Sport model offers every component expected from a luxury car, even when compared to the same-segment competitors which house impressive nameplates such as the BMW 5-Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

In terms of monetary value, especially, the G80 as a whole surpasses them. No price details have been announced yet. However, it is predicted that the 4-cylinder G80 version starts at more than $49,300, while the 2023 Genesis G80 Sport starts at almost $64,800.
