As other compact variants from the German-based luxury automobile manufacturer BMW such as the 1-Series and 2-Series Gran Coupe have already offered an M35i version, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising to see the new X1 receive the same treatment. The 2023 BMW X1 M35i is expected to follow the already announced 2023 X1 model as its top-ranking trim. Up to this point, the only known information about the X1 M35i is only acquired through spy photos, with the quad exhausts feature serving as its primary point.
Potential Powertrain of the X1 M35i
Albeit has been spotted to carry quad-exhaust tips, the 2023 BMW X1 M35i is certainly not a devoted M vehicle. Rather, it is categorized into the M Performance range which is only one tier behind the genuine M cars. Models under this classification tend to provide decent performance by carrying returned suspension and a balanced combination between performance and comfort.
The M35i trim is already offered in the BMW X2 Series, which is supported by a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that generates up to 301 horsepower. That being said, its X1 counterpart is expected to bring higher output—probably somewhere around the 340 horsepower range that’s going to put it in the same segment as the Mercedes-Benz AMG’s GLA35 and GLB35, power-wise.

The convenient, all-new 3rd-generation BMW X1 range has been confirmed. However, it is reported that the manufacturer is working on a more powerful variant version of this upscale crossover that made its debut in 2009. The prototype tester version was spotted again in October last year in Nurburgring, Germany, and it was photographed being driven amidst the cold climate of the Northern Europe area.
The 2023 BMW X1 M35i is captured wearing such a thick camouflage that covers its entire body, but there are some improvements spotted compared to the prior sighting in the fall season. Exterior design-wise, it sports a much more massive grille. However, the design of its LED headlights and bumper with broad central air intakes appear to be retained. From the side perspective, it boasts a muscular profile that enhances its appearance compared to the standard new generation of the X1 models.
If there is going to be doubt regarding the model being a sportier variant, the rear-end design will eliminate the said skepticism because it is equipped with four exhaust pipes. Other primary elements that separate this version from the standard ones are including dedication suspension components, brawnier brakes, new wheels, and exclusive exterior color paint options.
The audacity of the automaker to give quad exhausts on a 4-cylinder powered vehicle may invite criticisms from some, but it is important to check its competitors before making such a judgment. For example, the FWD-based Audi Sport S3 has been sporting four exhaust pipes for years already. Another instance, the FWD-driven Mercedes-AMG A 45 that’s equipped with a smaller 2L powertrain is also boosted by a quad exhaust system.
That being, for BMW standard, it will be quite a huge decision considering the X2 M35i, M135i hatchback, and M235i Gran Coupe are equipped with dual exhaust tips only. If it comes true, then the 2023 X1 will be the first lineup to receive such an idea. Moreover, it is going to be the first smaller crossover under the BMW M Performance group, even though it will not necessarily be the most powerful one.
According to insider information, the 2023 BMW X1 M35i will gain a curved central display as given by the manufacturer to its iX model as well. There is going to be one air ventilator in the middle of the dashboard panels. Also, it will be equipped with a 3-spoke steering wheel design.
