The BMW 5-Series offers a high-end interior, a sporty appearance, and sport-tuned parts. Here’s what to expect from the upcoming 2023 BMW M550.
The whole 5-Series lineup received a mid-cycle refresh for the 2021 model year and returns with slight adjustments for the next. The upcoming 2023 model year is also expected to be a carryover model that maintains the model’s luxury and performance, especially the highest-spec trim of the range. Find out about the 2023 BMW M550 engine, design, and technology below.
Powertrain of the High-Performing M550
As a car that falls into the mid-size luxury segment, the BMW 5-Series is the only sedan that offers hybrid powertrain technology, aside from the Volvo S90 Recharge. The model itself has been manufactured and distributed by the German automaker since 1972 as a replacement for the New Class Sedans. It marks the beginning of the 3-digit naming system and is the first model from BMW that’s given the ‘Series’ label to its nameplate. These days, the 5-Series is the second top-selling model out of all BMW lineups, only behind the highly popular 3-Series.
As per current, the car is in the 7th generation, which offers a total of four engine options where all of which are paired with 8-speed automatic transmission.
The 2023 BMW M550 arrives as the top-of-the-line performance trim of the series. Following the previous model year, it is still going to be powered by the M Performance 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 8-cylinder powertrain. The fuel efficiency of this fully-loaded trim is the lowest across the range at 17/25 mpg city/highway, but it’s hardly surprising considering that the engine is the most powerful one too.
Unknown Full Details Yet of the 2023 BMW M550
Up to this point, only spy photos of the 2023 BMW M550 and the entire trims in the lineup are available. According to the spotted sights and captured photographs of the luxury sedans, it seems to continue sporting the smaller size of BMW’s rather infamous kidney-shaped grille, rounded body frames, slimmer taillights, and slightly rounded headlights. On the side, it appears that the car is equipped with flush door handles. If this pre-production design comes true, then the manufacturer does listen to the feedback regarding the extreme design of the 4-Series and keeps it modest for the 5-Series.
The M550 trim, in particular, boasts the dynamic performance capabilities of the sedan. It is given the M aerodynamic package that includes M rear trunk spoiler that maximizes the airflow that passes over and around the car and emphasizes its sporty visual. Other designs such as front air intakes, front fenders, and mirror caps also enhance the dynamic appearance of this car.
So far, no image of the 2023 5-Series interior has been out yet. However, it is predicted to receive an overhaul with some fresh designs, upgraded screens, and revised center console features. The infotainment display location may be adjusted lower on the dashboard, the steering wheel may experience some new design, and the center console probably features buttons placed in one single line. The 5-Series has always provided high-end materials for the comfort of the passengers as well and this is expected to be maintained in the upcoming model.
Moving on to the technical features, similarly, nothing has been confirmed yet if the 2023 BMW M550 will receive some upgrades. However, there’s a big chance that the sedan is going to carry even more features. Currently, the model is equipped with a dual 12.3” screen for the infotainment and digital gauge cluster displays. Other features include a navigation system, 16-speaker audio setup, smartphone integration options (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), and gesture control. Most possibly, it is also going to bring the most recent iDrive infotainment system by the manufacturer.
As the top-ranking model of the range, the M550 provides a broad option of driver assistance functions, which are expected to be added with more features for the 2023 model year. The model now provides various standard features including lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, auto emergency braking, and traffic sign recognition. There are also various optional features such as a head-up display, park assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree parking camera.
