The Audi A5 Maintained Powertrain
The Audi A5 is a compact upscale coupe vehicle series manufactured since 2007 by the German luxury automobile marker, Audi. The A5 also consists of the cabriolet, coupe, and Sportback variants of the sedan and wagon Audi A4.
Based on the manufacturer’s internal numbering system, the Audi A5 is categorized under a series of cars with the B-platform, which it shares with the sedan and wagon Audi A4 as mentioned above. The Type 8T (A5’s first generation) is included as a B8 series member, while the Type 8W6 (A5’s second generation) is built using the B9 platform. Both platforms originate from Volkswagen’s Modular Longitudinal Matrix (MLB) build construction.
The current generation of Audi A5 (along with the coupe version of its high-performance counterpart, S5) is built on the 2016-launched MLB platform as well. It was revealed in 2016 as well.
Each Audi A5 is powered by a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This powertrain produces 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, which is more powerful than its sibling, the Audi A4. According to the EPA estimation, this engine setup is rated at 26 mpg city and 34 mpg highway for the Sportback version, while the convertible and coupe variants are rated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. The powertrain is expected to be retained by the 2023 Audi A5.
The engine brought by the A5 is by no means weak, but in case you want to opt for more power, you can choose the high-performance variant of this compact luxury car. The Audi S5 offers a 349 horsepower 3L single turbocharged V6 motor. If the number isn’t quite satisfying, then you may be interested in looking for the Audi RS5—essentially the strongest and the priciest A5 variant available. Even though the RS5 is equipped with a smaller 2.9L V6 engine, it is supported by twin turbochargers that make it capable to put out 444 horsepower.
New Standard Features and Design of the 2023 Audi A5
The 2023 Audi A5 brings a set of new standard features and extra items for the optional package. Starting from the exterior section, the 18” 5-double spoke wheels are now given as standard for the A5 Coupe, Cabriolet, and Sportback 45 variants. All versions across the range receive matrix-design LED headlights as standard features.
The Quantum Gray color option is replaced by Chronos Gray this time, which can be found in the A5 Coupe, Cabriolet, Sportback 45 variants, and performance-focused S5. Meanwhile, the Coupe and Sportback version of the RS5 gains a new Ascari Blue paint color in the event of Turbo Blue and Sonoma Green colors discontinuation.
Moving to the Black Optic Plus package reserved for the Coupe and Sportback models of the Audi A5, it gains black-toned exhaust tips and a rear lip spoiler. The Black Optic Plus package also now replaces the prior Black Optic Package option for the S5 Coupe and Sportback variants, which receives brand badges and rings in addition to the new package features mentioned previously. Note that this package option is available exclusively for the Premium Plus and Prestige trim grades.
Getting into the interior department, a few features made standard for the 2023 Audi A5 Cabriolet, including gray oak natural wood inlays, sports front seats, and illuminated door sill inlays. The exterior of this variant receives an S-line exterior as well.
An interior package called Sport available for the 2023 Audi S5 offers additions of red-stitched seats, black interior, and RS Carbon-fiber inlays.
The 2023 A5 and S5 Convenience packages now provide adaptive cruise control safety features. Meanwhile, the Premium Plus trim for both models receive the premium 3D B&O audio system as standard.
Potential Release Date and Pricing Range
There is no official mention yet of the 2023 Audi A5 release date, but it is most likely already available for the buyers at the end of the 2022 calendar year. The pricing range of the A5—which is quite wide but not surprising considering the series carries a lot of different models—begins from $46,200 up to $76,200.
